From beer to biodiversity

Interdisciplinary and inspiring: this year's excursion took our Bachelor's and Master's students to highlights with exciting insights into technology, management and sustainability in Nuremberg and Bamberg.

Shortly before Christmas, our annual excursion took place - this time interdisciplinary with students from the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs "Ecology and Environmental Protection", "Mechanical Engineering", "Mechanical Engineering KIA", "Green Engineering" and "Integrated management systems". The destinations were the cities of Nuremberg and Bamberg.

A varied program: from technology to tradition

The program started with a visit to the BrauBeviale in Nuremberg. There we learned about the latest trends in raw materials, technology and environmental protection using the beer brewing industry as an example. A special highlight followed with a visit to the traditional company Lebkuchen-Schmidt. Of course, a tasting of the delicious gingerbread was not to be missed.

Day 2: Exciting company tours

On the second day, our group split up:

  • The students on the "Mechanical Engineering" and "Green Engineering" courses visited Maschinenbau Leicht GmbH in Bamberg. Under the expert guidance of Matthias Popp (Sales Manager), the focus was on the company's plant technology and production processes.
  • The students on the "Ecology and Environmental Protection" and "Integrated Management Systems" courses visited the Schaeffler branch in Hirschaid. There, Thomas Ballack (Environmental Protection Specialist, Fire Protection and Hazardous Material Officer) presented the integrated environmental, energy and occupational safety management system. Particular attention was paid to the measures to promote biodiversity on the company premises - an impressive example of sustainable management.

Closing with pleasure

To round off the excursion, we visited the private brewery Konrad Will, which combines state-of-the-art brewing technology with traditional craftsmanship. Of course, a tasting of the beer was not to be missed here either.

We returned to Zittau safely and satisfied with many new professional and cultural impressions - thanks to the great organization by "Komm mit Reisen" and Heiko Ottersky.
