Health management

  • Health management - what is it?

Health management (HM) is the planned organization of measures aimed at improving people's health. Both individual and social aspects are taken into account.

Health management deals with the analysis and assessment of health risks, the development of prevention strategies, the planning and implementation of health programs and the coordination and control of the healthcare system. It aims to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of healthcare and to ensure access to medical care for all population groups.

In addition, health management includes the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, health promotion in the workplace, ensuring an adequate healthcare infrastructure and taking into account the social determinants of health. It aims to create a comprehensive and sustainable health policy that includes both preventive and curative measures.

Overall, health management aims to build a society in which people can enjoy the best possible health and quality of life by effectively utilizing the resources of the healthcare system and meeting the health needs of the population.

  • What is occupational health management?

Occupational health management (OHM) encompasses all measures and activities in a company that aim to promote the health and well-being of employees. It is a holistic approach that aims to improve working conditions, minimize health risks and maintain and strengthen the individual health and performance of employees.

Occupational health management is based on three pillars: occupational health and safety, occupational integration management and workplace health promotion. The third pillar covers various areas, including the promotion of physical health, mental well-being and social interaction in the workplace.

Typical BGM measures include health promotion programs, ergonomic workplace design, stress management measures, workplace integration management, addiction prevention, healthy nutrition, exercise promotion and health training.

Effective occupational health management offers benefits for both employees and the company. For employees, it creates a healthier working environment, promotes well-being, reduces stress and supports the work-life balance. This can lead to greater satisfaction, motivation and productivity. For the company, good occupational health management can reduce absenteeism, strengthen employee retention and loyalty, increase job satisfaction and reduce operating costs.

Ideally, occupational health management should be developed and implemented in close cooperation between company management, HR departments, managers and employees. It requires systematic planning, continuous evaluation and the creation of a health-promoting corporate culture.

It is important to note that occupational health management is not a one-off project, but an ongoing process that should be continuously adapted and improved to meet the changing needs of employees and the company.

  • What is university health management?

University health management (HGM) is a specific concept of occupational health management that is geared towards the needs of universities and their students, lecturers and staff. It aims to promote the health and well-being of all university members and to establish health-promoting structures and processes at universities.

University health management comprises various measures and activities aimed at creating a healthy and productive university community. These include, for example, the promotion of a healthy study and work environment, the prevention and management of study and examination stress, support with psychological stress, the promotion of exercise and sport, nutritional advice, addiction prevention and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

Effective university health management can help to improve study and working conditions, reduce the drop-out rate, strengthen the mental health of students and employees and promote general well-being at universities. It can also help to establish a positive and health-promoting organizational culture that integrates the importance of health and well-being into everyday university life.

University health management is usually led by specialized teams or institutions at universities that work closely with university management, departments, student services and other relevant stakeholders. The implementation of university health management requires a holistic approach that is tailored to the needs and challenges of the university community.

In addition to promoting individual health, university health management also focuses on the prevention and management of structural stresses and challenges that can arise from everyday university life. This includes, for example, improving study conditions, promoting the compatibility of study, work and family and strengthening the social support systems at universities.
