FAQ

  • Is KIA a dual study program?

...yes, of course. Unfortunately, the term "dual study program" is sometimes used in a somewhat inflationary way. You can find out more about the special quality of our "training-integrated dual KIA study program" here on our website. Incidentally, our KIApro is a "work-integrated dual study program" due to the lack of vocational training.

  • Where do I have to apply for a KIA study program?

The application must first be sent to a company. Please take a look at the list of our cooperation partners
You can apply to these companies, but also to any other company you know if it is willing to participate in KIA and conclude a cooperation agreement with the university.

Please note: Some (larger) companies explicitly expect online applications. Find out beforehand on the home page of the desired company.

  • By when do I have to apply?

Applications should be submitted to the company between September and January at the latest.
Please note: Larger companies in particular expect applications one year before the start of training.

Of course, with a bit of luck you may still get a place even if you apply much later, e.g. because a place that has already been filled becomes available again.

You can find more information on this under Study procedure.

  • What application documents do I need to submit?

You apply to the company with the usual application documents for vocational training, of course with reference to KIA.
Once you have signed a contract with the company (apprenticeship or internship contract), the second step is to submit a formal application to the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for a place on the relevant KIA course.

The application to the university must be accompanied by

    • formal application for enrolment/admission to the university
      (information on the application procedure)
    • Certified copy of the high school diploma
    • Copy of training or internship contract with the company
    • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
    • colored passport photo
    • stamped A5 envelope
  • What entry requirements do I have to fulfill for KIA?

    KIA and KIAdirekt:
You already have a university entrance qualification (degree from a vocational grammar school or upper secondary school for technology, degree from a technical secondary school or degree from a general grammar school). You should also enjoy solving technical problems in a team, be creative and interested in science.

    KIApro:
You already have a vocational qualification and should have a valid university entrance qualification.

    KIA+:
You need a good secondary school leaving certificate - especially in the natural sciences - and should be able to demonstrate particular interest in the desired course of study (student internship, work group, etc.).

  • How are the practical semester and Bachelor's or diploma phase structured?

You complete the practical semester in your KIA company, and the same applies to the final thesis.

During the practical semester, you will work on a topic that is usually assigned by the training company and supervised by a professor at the university. In addition, a practical semester paper must be written and defended (see practical module in the module catalog). At least 20 weeks are compulsory in the practical semester.

The Bachelor's phase and the diploma semester are similar. Here too, you will be given a topic, preferably by the training company. You then work on this in the company and you only have to attend individually agreed consultation appointments with your university supervisor.

The course is completed with the final defense of the thesis. You can also find more detailed information about your degree program in the module catalog.

  • What vacation entitlement do I have?

Your statutory leave entitlement in the first phase of your studies (skilled worker training + studies during semesters 1 to 3.2) is regulated in the training or qualification contract and amounts to at least 24 days per year.

These conditions are usually continued in the subsequent study support contract with your company. The leave must be taken during the periods when there are no courses.

  • Are the KIA study programs accredited?

Yes, all of our KIA Bachelor's degree programs have been accredited.

This external quality control is very important to us and our KIA partner companies. Accreditation is not planned for the diploma courses, but their standards correspond to those of the bachelor's degree courses.
