Transformation, Housing and Social Spatial Development (TRAWOS)

Founded in 2004, the Institute for Transformation, Housing and Social Spatial Development (TRAWOS for short) deals with the problems of changing societies from the perspective of interdisciplinary and application-oriented transformation research with a focus on rural regions and their actors in their spatio-temporal relationships.

The Institute, its members and staff are primarily committed to the university research focus "Transformation Processes in Economy and Society" as well as the bridging function to Poland, the Czech Republic and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

The Institute's main areas of activity include
  • Realization of social science research and practical projects in the context of demographic, economic-technical, social and cultural change
  • Linking research and shaping practice in the form of applied research, consulting and participatory knowledge transfer
  • Linking research and teaching in the context of research seminars, research internships, lecture series or theses
  • Creation and promotion of a public space for discourse on issues of regional and social spatial development as well as civil society engagement and democratic political culture
The central topics of current research are:
  • Structural change and innovative regional development in Upper Lusatia with a focus on demography, migration, integration, gender and governance
  • Urbanity in medium-sized towns and new concepts of rurality in peripheral areas
  • Socio-ecological transformation and its management
  • Social, political and civic inclusion and participation as well as democratic cultural development
  • Cross-border aspects of working, living, housing and cooperation under post-communist conditions
  • European and regional integration processes in the border triangle
