Scholarships

The organizations for the promotion of gifted students

As a scholarship holder of the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst, it is important to me to motivate other students to apply to the scholarship organizations for gifted students. Because it's not just good grades that count - talent is multifaceted! Everyone can share their talents with others in their own way. The Studienwerk is particularly pleased to receive applications from students studying at universities of applied sciences." Maria, Author and initiator of this site.

In total, around 2 % of all students in Germany, i.e. around 40,000, receive a scholarship. Half of these are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research through one of the 13 organizations for the promotion of gifted students. In addition, there are a large number of private or company-related foundations that also award scholarships.

Reasons for a scholarship

One of the main reasons is the generous financial support that scholarship holders receive. This applies for the entire duration of the Bachelor's and Master's degree and/or doctorate, as well as any additional qualifications required to complete the degree (e.g. psychotherapist training after graduation).

It is made up of various parts:

  • Income-dependent: Regular BAföG of the student (max. 744,-€ per month)
  • Independent of income: € 300 per month as a lump sum for study costs
  • Additional: family allowance and childcare allowance
  • Additional grants for stays abroad (semester abroad, internships, language courses and much more)

And: none of this has to be paid back!

However, there are many other advantages to a scholarship from a scholarship organization for gifted students:

  • Ideal support
  • Support and advice on important study and life decisions
  • Access to exclusive networks and experience reports
  • Lifelong affiliation through regional groups and alumni meetings
  • Support for the development of (self-)critical and independent-minded personalities who will shape Germany's economic, social and cultural future as high achievers and leaders.
What is a talent promotion organization and which ones are there?

The 13 organizations that are supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research are known as "Begabtenförderungswerke". They can be divided into different categories.

Application formalities

All German and EU-European students as well as persons who fulfill §8 BAföG (nationals, foreigners with permanent residence in Germany, tolerated foreigners, etc.) can apply. The aim is to study at German universities and colleges, but in exceptional cases it is also possible to study abroad. As a rule, this must be the first course of study; funding for a second course of study is only possible if this is essential for achieving a professional qualification.

In addition, each institution has its own regulations regarding admission requirements. Further information can be found on the websites of the respective foundations.

Requirements - in addition to the application formalities

Good grades are a prerequisite for all foundations; however, these alone are not enough to receive a scholarship. The foundations also attach great importance to social/political commitment, a willingness to take on responsibility, an interest in interdisciplinary exchange and the desire to get involved and help shape things. The following always applies: talent and commitment are versatile! Most scholarship providers are primarily interested in whether a person shares their skills with society and takes on responsibility.

Application procedure

Most scholarship providers select their scholarship holders in a multi-stage process:

  1. Written application (usually online) by a certain application deadline
  2. Pre-selection interview
  3. Selection workshop

In addition to a CV and letter of motivation, the unsolicited application usually also requires social and professional assessments as well as answers to a section of questions on interdisciplinary topics.

If the application is rejected, it is usually possible to reapply after a defined period of time.
