Becoming an engineer or a teacher - or both?

Studying engineering education combines both career paths and opens up attractive career opportunities.

One degree course - diverse career opportunities! Saxony is breaking new ground in the training of skilled workers by combining academic engineering training with teacher training for vocational school teachers. Through a unique cooperation model, the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida and the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz together with the TU Dresden have developed the "Engineering Pedagogy" course and launched a comprehensive information offer at www.ingenieurpaedagogik-sachsen.de. The Free State of Saxony and the Saxon universities are thus responding to the shortage of skilled workers in the economy as well as the shortage of teachers at vocational schools.

The aim is to provide prospective students with as good an overview as possible of the opportunities and possibilities of the courses on offer.

Engineering Education combines engineering studies with pedagogical content and qualifies graduates in six or seven semesters to work as engineers in the technical field as well as in technical education and training. After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering, students have the opportunity to enter directly into a higher semester of the teacher training course at TU Dresden and take the state examination to become a teacher for vocational schools. Upon completion of the subsequent preparatory service and the second state examination, graduates can be employed as civil servants in the Saxon civil service. With the SchulAQ (School Assistant in Qualification) program, students can be employed in the Saxon school service after completing their Bachelor's degree and complete their teacher training at the same time.

Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow comments:

The engineering education course is another building block in the Free State's strategy to respond to the shortage of skilled workers in essential areas. Teachers at vocational schools and specialists in technical professions will be urgently needed throughout Saxony in the coming years. By combining the two fields of study, prospective students do not have to choose one or the other career path from the outset. Students are therefore very flexible and at the same time highly qualified.
Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow

Prof. Michael Kobel, Vice-Rector for Education at TU Dresden, explains:

With its commitment to the new study model, TU Dresden, together with three universities of applied sciences, is also meeting the demand for teacher training in the regions of Saxony. There is a particularly high demand in the industrial-technical teaching profession. With a very broad range of subjects, TU Dresden is one of Germany's leading universities for teacher training in vocational schools.
Prof. Michael Kobel

The Bachelor's degree course in Engineering Education can be taken at the universities of Zwickau, Mittweida and Zittau/Görlitz with different subject specializations. Students choose two specializations from the courses offered by the universities: Mechanical and metal engineering or mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, computer science as well as textile technology/clothing and economics. This specialist content is supplemented by pedagogical content with a strong practical focus. The educational science and didactic courses are offered across all universities under the technical responsibility of TU Dresden.

The Engineering Pedagogy course is also aimed at skilled workers in the technical field with professional experience who do not have a university entrance qualification but would like to develop their careers. The course offers skilled workers with a technical education a further qualification as well as entry into higher salary brackets.
