Foreword by Rita Süssmuth and afterword by Olaf Zimmermann.
Integration policy has a dual focus: the host society and those who are accepted. The publication presented here is the first study in Germany to examine the potentials and difficulties of cultural appropriation in the integration process, focusing on both groups.
The starting point for the one-year research was interviews with twenty decision-makers from business, politics and the arts as well as around two hundred police officers. Further analyses revealed a considerable lack of theory and data on cultural appropriation processes. At the same time, structural weaknesses of the German state became clear. These have become more visible in the political upheavals of the so-called "refugee crisis" and should now be resolved, also in the context of the United Nations' "One World".
A series of recommendations for action show how integration can work, how mental or spatial ghettoization can be avoided and how greater cohesion can be achieved in German society. In the study, the reader will find a variety of perspectives and arguments that go far beyond the previous discussion on immigration, cultural appropriation and integration.
The authors of the study are the cultural policy expert Matthias Theodor Vogt together with the political scientists Erik Fritzsche and Christoph Meißelbach. Individual contributions were made by Lord Mayor Siegfried Deinege, Werner J. Patzelt and Anton Sterbling. Former Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth wrote the foreword and Olaf Zimmermann, Managing Director of the German Cultural Council, the epilogue.
