Dr. Hanna Haag and Dr. Daniel Kubiak will talk about their joint research project University in times of crisis. A qualitative-explorative study on the experience of the corona pandemic among university lecturers and students (08/2020 - 02/2021) will speak.
The explorative research project at the Trawos Institute at Zittau/ Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, which was conducted under the direction of Dr. Hanna Haag in cooperation with Dr. Daniel Kubiak (Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research (BIM) and Institute for Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), investigated how the crisis situation in the wake of the corona pandemic and in particular the effects of the nationwide exit restrictions were experienced at German universities in the period from August 2020 to January 2021.
Data from digitally conducted group discussions (N= 11) and guided individual interviews (N= 2) with teachers and students from three federal states (Hesse, Berlin and Saxony) served as the empirical basis.
It became apparent that the coronavirus pandemic has had far-reaching consequences for university life, particularly the teaching situation and issues relating to the compatibility of private life and work or studies. New problems such as the dissolution of boundaries in everyday working life, digital knowledge transfer that is perceived as distant and isolated or the new precarization in terms of gender or social status point to existing structural problems, some of which are exacerbated by the changed framework conditions for teaching, research and studying. At the same time, they reveal new opportunities for change that need to be initiated in the higher education system.
