German unification preceded the transformation, just as the transformation was a prerequisite for unification. Only through the (successful) East German transformation did unification appear (successfully) achievable. But unification also completed the East German revolution and transformation (in central dimensions). Conversely, it was precisely the successful unification that was to enable and drive forward the transformation of West German society as a whole. But did this - second? - transformation at all and what about it? Was or is it conducive to unification or, on the contrary, are East and West Germany currently separating again?
If we do not want to be confused by these contradictions and paradoxes, we need a new reflection on the relationship between East German transformation and German unification. This must extend historically, address (meaningful and effective) fictions of the actors and must not omit the multi-layered frictions and contradictions in the upheaval processes after 1989/90.
