The event will focus on the structural strengthening project of Prof. Dr. Ilona Otto "REBOOST - A Boost for Rural Lignite Regions" .The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz is working in a team with partners from Climat-KIC Germany and Poland, the Brandenburg University of Technology, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, E3G, Timis Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and the Stowarzyszenie Centrum Rozwiazan Systemowych.

The aim of the project is to support stakeholders in three different regions (Lusatia in Germany, Konin in Poland and Gorj in Romania) in the transition from the current high economic dependence on lignite to a low-carbon future. The three regions share some characteristics that complicate the transition process, including economic downturn, ageing population, lack of employment opportunities and weak stakeholder cooperation. However, the regions differ in terms of the availability of political support from governments and funding for the transition process. The REBOOST team aims to use strategic simulation techniques to involve local stakeholders in the design and exploration of alternative future pathways. There is also a focus on international networking and exchange to promote mutual learning and the dissemination of innovations in the three regions. The ultimate goal is to implement the ideas through the cooperation of stakeholders and responsible institutions and to implement them at the locations in the long term.
