"We are delighted that the University Information Day was once again well received," says Dr. Stefan Kühne, Director of Studies and International Affairs. More than 600 prospective students took advantage of the offer at both university locations and informed themselves in detail about the study opportunities and study conditions.
In addition to numerous prospective students from the region, prospective students from the Dresden, Riesa, Meißen, Erzgebirge and Brandenburg regions were also welcomed, who had specifically made the journey to Zittau and Görlitz. They had already gathered information about the university at trade fairs and on the Internet and now wanted to see the study conditions at the university for themselves.
Rector Professor Friedrich Albrecht welcomed the guests to Görlitz this year. "One of the most important decisions you make in your life is choosing the right subject," he said. He encouraged the young visitors to talk to students from a wide range of degree courses, take a look around the university and take advantage of the taster courses on offer. "You can get first-hand information from our students in the "Students advise students" project," he said.
Professor Christa Heidger, Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs, opened the university information day at the Zittau site. She pointed out that the university would like to offer young people in the region in particular career prospects with its diverse and promising range of courses. "As a university, we are also interested in retaining young, intelligent people for companies, but also as young academics for the university itself," she said. In this context, she also referred to the new courses on offer and recommended that guests make active use of the extensive range of events on offer and find out about the study conditions.
The new courses offered by the university met with great interest. From the summer semester of 2018, the new three-semester Master's degree program "Pharmaceutical Biotechnology" will be offered. The application deadline is February 28, 2018 and the course begins on March 12, 2018. The university will also be offering a seven-semester Bachelor's degree course in Applied Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry in life and material sciences from the 2018/19 winter semester. The course offers an optimal education. Depending on the field of study, students gain a specific insight into the fields of plastics technology and surface technology or chemical biology in addition to scientific and chemical fundamentals. The course is also available as a dual course (with integrated training as a chemical laboratory technician or pharmaceutical technician). In addition to the Bachelor's degree, students on the dual course of study acquire the professional qualification of chemical laboratory technician (with Chamber of Industry and Commerce examination) in a shortened training course and on the basis of a training contract with a company.
The KIA stand (cooperative studies with integrated training) in Zittau was also a hive of activity. Numerous pupils were particularly interested in this form of study. KIA employees and KIA students from the university's training workshop were happy to answer questions about this now very popular form of training.
The so-called "MINT Mobility Trail" of the Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Natural and Environmental Sciences was very well received. Prospective students took advantage of the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills.
Many visitors were impressed by the modern facilities at the university, but also by the informal atmosphere they found. The short lectures, taster opportunities and laboratory tours were very popular. The prospective students also made intensive use of the opportunity to talk to the students themselves and discuss everyday life at the university.
But the university was not the only focus of interest. The halls of residence were inspected and the canteens were also very busy, with guests taking the opportunity to try out the food on offer.
