Cooperation between the HSZG and TURAN University Almaty

At the beginning of the 2018/19 academic year, Prof. Roland Giese, Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies, paid his now traditional visit to TURAN University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

There has been regular contact between our universities for 15 years. Members of the university management, teaching staff and students have visited Zittau several times. In 2017, our rector, Prof. Friedrich Albrecht, took part in the 25th anniversary celebrations of TURAN University in Almaty.

During Prof. Giese's recent visit, the topics of discussion for further cooperation focused on the following three areas:

  • Supervision of doctoral students at TURAN University (guest lectures on issues of transformation processes in the economy and society in Europe) and specific supervision of own doctoral students. This year, Ms. Elmira Elanira successfully defended her dissertation on "The Kazakh higher education system as a factor in future economic development".

  • Advice and professional exchange on teaching issues. This year, the focus was on working with case studies. Teachers and Master's students discussed how this instrument can be used to increase teaching success.

  • Sharing German (European) experience of university management and academic transfer from university to practice with staff at TURAN University and other institutions.

As part of his cultural work, Prof. Roland Giese also had the opportunity this year to take part in the celebrations to mark the 4350th anniversary of the founding of the first Kingdom of Korea at the South Korean Embassy. TURAN University, like many other Kazakh institutions, is not only oriented towards Europe (the West) but also very intensively towards Asia and, due to its size, primarily towards South Korea.
