Excellent doctoral candidate from Zittau

Marcus Rohne is doing his doctorate as part of the LaNDER³ project. He defended his dissertation with "Magna cum laude".

Marcus Rohne, who has worked as a research assistant at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) since 2017, has successfully completed his doctorate as part of the LaNDER³ project. Under the second assessment of HSZG Professor Jens Meinert, who took over as Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on September 1, 2024, Rohne defended his dissertation entitled "Contributions to the design of near-contour temperature control channels in tools with variothermal process control" at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg.

Rohne, who received his mechanical engineering degree from the Technical University of Dresden in 2014, worked on the optimization of tools for thermal shaping (e.g. injection moulding of plastics) in his doctoral thesis. Specifically, he developed calculation approaches that enable both an efficient use of heat and a uniform temperature distribution. These calculation methods are designed in such a way that they can also be practically applied by toolmakers.

Rohne began his scientific career at the Fraunhofer IFAM Dresden, where he initially worked in a working group headed by Professor Meinert on a part-time basis after completing his diploma thesis on thermoelectrics. In 2017, he moved to the HSZG and worked on various sub-projects as part of the LaNDER³ project, again under the direction of Professor Meinert. His focus was on the energy efficiency of thermal processes in the production of natural fiber-reinforced plastic components - an area of great importance for the heat transition, as German industry has so far only obtained 6 percent of its process heat from renewable sources.

The doctoral defense took place on May 17, 2024 at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. The committee had already agreed in advance that the written thesis would be assessed as "very good". After a 30-minute presentation and a 90-minute question and answer session, the committee unanimously decided to award the dissertation the grade "Magna cum laude".

With the successful completion of his doctorate, Marcus Rohne left the HSZG on May 31, 2024 and resumed his work as a research assistant in his former working group at Fraunhofer IFAM Dresden, which he will head from October 1, 2024.

His doctoral supervisor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Fieback from the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg commented on his success with the words: "Please more such excellent doctoral candidates from Zittau!" The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences congratulates Marcus Rohne on this outstanding success and wishes him all the best for his future career.
