Perfect start to the new phase of life

The Come In weeks make it easier to start your studies this year too.

After school, training or a year abroad, for many, studying marks the start of a whole new phase in their lives. As part of the Come In weeks, which took place from 12 - 23.09.2022, the new students were able to attend various preliminary courses. Whether root functions, differential calculus, circuits, induction, stoichiometry, redox reactions, centripetal force or the law of mass action - the participants had numerous courses to choose from to refresh their knowledge.
The preliminary courses were organized this year under the direction of the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs, Prof. Keil from the Education Department, the faculties, the StuRa and the student councils.
Zittau, as a location for technical degree courses, had its usual wide range of courses in mathematics, electrical engineering, chemistry and physics. At the Görlitz site, a mathematics pre-course was offered especially for students of the Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies and a computer science pre-course for new computer science students.

The Come In weeks in figures

With a total of 99 students, the courses were very popular. 84 of our new students took part in the mathematics pre-courses in Zittau and Görlitz. The physics pre-course was attended by 50 inquisitive students, the chemistry courses were well attended with 25, electrical engineering with 30 and computer science with 17 participants.

The "feel-good factor" is important to us

In addition to the necessary basic knowledge, general well-being is probably just as important for successful studies. This is the aim of our leisure activities, which were organized together with the student council and the student councils and offered a colourful mix of different excursions and activities. Whether it was a cozy evening by the lake or on campus or a hike through the nearby mountainous landscape - the shared get-together provided space for conversations with like-minded people and at the same time showed the many possibilities of the inviting Upper Lusatia region.

The city tours were very well attended. In Zittau, there were cellar vaults in the historic town center to marvel at, while Görlitz, the easternmost town in the republic, shone with its Wilhelminian charm.

As in previous years, the Zittau pub crawl was a highlight. Guided by student helpers, the groups visited the city's most popular pubs as part of an evening-long program. The sociable evening ended at a common destination, the DeZi-Bar.

Bottom line

Once again this year, we can draw a positive conclusion after the Come In weeks. For several years now, they have been an important building block for starting a degree course at the HSZG. Many young people who have decided to study in Zittau or Görlitz have found it easier to start their new phase of life.

The organizers would like to thank all those involved who contributed to the success of the teaching and leisure events. Special thanks go to the lecturers of the preliminary courses in mathematics, Professor Mashuryan and Professor Schnell. We would also like to thank Mr. Cella, who has been supporting the course and tutorials for many years, as well as Ms. Grohmann and Mr. Eger. We would also like to thank Mr. Prasse for conducting the chemistry pre-course, Mr. Spitzner for leading the physics course, Ms. Herzig for teaching the E-technology pre-course and Dr. Renger for offering the computer science pre-course. A big thank you also goes to all the hard-working helpers from the StuRa, the student councils and the student assistants.

We wish the new students a successful start to their first semester and a pleasant time studying at our university.
