The housing and real estate management students digitized the Erich Scholz observatory on Hochwaldstrasse last year.
Digitalization in the construction industry is advancing. Digital 3D models (digital twin), 360-degree scans of existing buildings and building information modeling (BIM) are now part of construction and the life cycle of buildings. The Housing and real estate managers of the HSZG must be prepared for the digital challenges in their day-to-day work.
Prof. Thomas Worbs and laboratory engineer Jan Fallgatter have been offering the 5 ECTS module Digital Building Surveying since the summer semester 2022.
The course emerged from the surveying module of the former Faculty of Civil Engineering.
The Erich Scholz public observatory in Zittau was the object of the students' exercise last spring. The building and its structural surroundings were photographed and digitized. The complete canon of recording methods was studied and applied. From classic manual recording to levelling, tachymetry and laser scanning, the course moved on to photogrammetry.
In laser scanning, point clouds were evaluated in digital space and the object structures were automatically generated as textures.
The photogrammetric recording of small objects developed into an entertaining challenge in the seminar groups.
In a joint effort, the digital 3D model of the observatory was modeled in CAD and compared with the automatically generated model from point clouds.
Digitization and the associated automation are progressing. The technical possibilities and rapid development are impressive. Despite all this, the conclusion is clear: Without basic knowledge, the applications are worthless. And regardless of which technical methods are used, engineering-like, conscientious work is essential.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the Zittauer Sternfreunde e.V. association, especially Mr. Kitta, who gave the students uncomplicated access to the object at any time.
