The new Bachelor's degree program at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering starts in the winter semester 22/23.
Prof. Bernd Bellair, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, reveals why another mechanical engineering course is being launched in the fall and what students can expect.
Prof. Bellair, what can students expect from the new course?
Students can expect a course with a high degree of practical relevance and a Bachelor's degree after seven semesters. The course cleverly combines mechanical engineering subjects with educational science and didactics, which can be supplemented with subjects from economics or electrical engineering. The practical phases can be completed in vocational schools and companies, primarily in eastern Saxony. The university will support the search for a practical placement.
What jobs await them in the business world?
Graduates can be employed in training and further education or in sales. Among other things, they can prepare and conduct training courses and user consultations or develop illustrative and teaching materials. The latter also applies if they decide to work for a private training provider.
As you say, they can also go into the state education service. Surely this requires a postgraduate degree?
The postgraduate course leading to the state examination - teacher training at vocational schools - takes place at the TU Dresden, with which the university offers this course in cooperation.
Is this a unique course of study in Germany?
No, comparable models also exist in other federal states.
When will the first students be enrolled?
The application phase begins in May and the program starts in October 2022 at the beginning of the 2022/23 winter semester.
What are the requirements for enrolment?
As with all Bachelor's degree courses at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, admission requires a general higher education entrance qualification, a relevant subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or, in this case, a relevant master craftsman's examination. An interest in the communication of technical contexts is an advantage. Vocational training or professional experience in the technical field is a prerequisite for further studies in Dresden. Professional experience can also be acquired during the course of study through internships during the lecture-free period.
The interview was conducted by Jan Lange for the Zittau edition of the Sächsische Zeitung.
You can apply for the new degree program from 16 May 2022.
