HSZG intensifies cooperation with North-West University (NWU) in South Africa
Frank Worlitz from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at our university spent three weeks at North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom, South Africa, at the beginning of April 2025. The focus of the visit was on deepening and strategically developing the long-standing cooperation between the two universities in the areas of research and teaching.
The partnership between Prof. Frank Worlitz (HSZG) and Prof. George van Schoor (NWU) has existed since 2004 and is a prime example of sustainable international cooperation. The starting point was joint research in the field of magnetic bearing technology, in particular the mathematical modeling and simulation of snap bearings. Over the years, numerous projects have been initiated, which are characterized by regular mutual visits, joint courses and an intensive exchange of students and scientists. Numerous Master's and doctoral students from both universities have spent time at the other location and completed their theses as part of the cooperation. A former exchange student from South Africa is now a professor at NWU.
During his stay, Prof. Worlitz met with professors and laboratory engineers at NWU to exchange teaching experiences and discuss current research topics and future projects. A central topic was the further development of research in the field of fault detection and diagnostics based on energy modeling - a field that is of great importance for the development of efficient and reliable mechatronic systems.
Another focus was on the exchange of information on teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in mechatronics. Here, experiences were exchanged on curricula, teaching methods and examination formats in order to further modernize education at both locations and open up international perspectives for students
An important goal of the collaboration is to promote the international exchange of Master's and PhD students. In the past, students from NWU and HSZG have already been able to gain valuable experience abroad as part of joint projects and theses. These programs are to be further expanded in order to give even more students the opportunity to participate in international research projects and expand their skills. In preparation for this, several meetings were held with current Master's students.
Based on the discussions with colleagues in South Africa and previously in China and India, Prof. Worlitz developed a proposal for a new degree course in "Automation and Robotics" with special modules on AI applications during the study visit for another international project. In addition, specializations in building automation, management and computer science are planned. Furthermore, a concept for the module "Introduction to AI Application for Engineers" was developed for students of the HSZG. This module is intended to provide engineering students with basic knowledge and practical skills in dealing with artificial intelligence.
The long-standing, trusting cooperation between Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and North-West University is an important driver of innovation and internationalization in research and teaching. The current initiatives and the intensive personal exchange during the visit lay the foundation for further joint projects and offer students and researchers from both universities excellent development opportunities.
Both partners are looking forward to continuing and further expanding this successful collaboration.
