A with an asterisk for mechanical engineering

The degree programs of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering have been successfully accredited or certified.

Dean Professor Bernd Bellair is impressed. The Bachelor's, Master's and Diploma degree courses in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, with the two branches of study "Mechanical Engineering" and "Energy and Environmental Engineering", have now been accredited or certified for seven years. With two special features: For the first time since the quality review procedure was introduced at the HSZG, this was done without conditions. Unconditional means that the review jury found no quality deficiencies. And for the first time, diploma courses were also subjected to this review procedure.

"We received the minutes of the review in mid-December and were able to comment on them. It also contained points of criticism that we should work on in the future. We thought to ourselves: we'll try to solve these challenges immediately. We had already implemented the improvements identified by the advisory board by the end of January. So there was nothing fundamental left to complain about," says Professor Bernd Bellair, summarizing his faculty's recipe for success.

Dr Peggy Sommer, responsible for quality management in the University Development and Communication department, also sounds enthusiastic: "The faculty was super organized. The students involved in the review process were full of praise. If there are operational problems, they are solved quickly. From the students' point of view, there is simply nothing to complain about. The atmosphere at the faculty is harmonious, almost informal. From their point of view, it is therefore not surprising that the faculty mastered the assessment so excellently.

Ensuring good teaching

The accreditation or certification of degree programs is a quality assurance instrument within the framework of quality management for studying and teaching at the HSZG. The quality of all HSZG degree programs is assessed every seven years. External experts are always involved in the process.

In this procedure, the external advisory board consisted of Professors Dr.-Ing. Jens Morgenstern (HTW Dresden) and Dr. rer. nat. Kay-Uwe Kasch (Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin) as well as Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Isabell Schlick (Bombardier Transportation Görlitz, since January 2021 Alstom GmbH) as a representative of professional practice and student Laura Zellermann (Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin).

The advisory board assessed from a professional perspective by reviewing the extensive written self-presentations of the degree programs and conducting an on-site visit. In November 2020, the reviewers spoke with managers, lecturers and students of the participating degree programs. The Advisory Board prepared its report between December 2020 and February 2021.

With the highest praise

On the basis of the advisory board's report, the review jury awarded accreditation or certification for the ten degree programs at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for seven years. The review jury is made up of the Rector, the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs and one representative from each of the six faculties of the HSZG. The review jury made its decision on April 14, 2021. Freely interpreted: An A with an asterisk!

"For me, the result is in line with our self-image: we train engineers at our faculty who tackle our social issues in a future-oriented, swift and efficient manner. We see the challenges as opportunities. In doing so, we all pull together. Empowering our students to make the world a better place is our top priority.

Professor Bernd Bellair is rightly proud of his faculty's achievements.
