Service learning: competence orientation in teaching by strengthening social commitment

Begin 24. June 2025 - 09:00 Uhr
End 23. September 2025 - 12:30 Uhr

Service-learning is a form of seminar in which subject-related learning content is combined with project-based activities in non-profit contexts. Students implement social, ecological or cultural projects in non-profit contexts for a limited period of time in line with the respective theoretical content. In this way, theoretical knowledge can be put into practice and reflected upon at the same time. In addition to subject-specific learning, service learning can also strengthen a variety of other skills, such as social and personal skills.

In the two-day workshop, the concept of service learning will first be presented in a keynote speech, along with practical examples and research findings on its effects. The possible curricular fit with individual teaching will then be reflected upon. Possible stumbling blocks and challenges in implementation will then be considered, and various didactic tools (e.g. structuring in the course of the project) will be presented that can be used to support, guide and reflect on non-profit project learning.

The workshop will also focus on individual support and advice for lecturers who are planning a specific service learning seminar in the winter semester 2025/2026. Participants will work in small groups and exchange ideas interactively. The second day of the workshop serves to comprehensively prepare the implementation and presentation of their own concepts. The intensive exchange between the participants and feedback on the concepts helps with the development of teaching.

Learning objectives

At the end of the event, participants will be able to...

  • integrate the basics of the service-learning concept into their own teaching in a well-founded and substantiated way,
  • support student project learning with didactic tools and
  • give feedback on various concepts of service learning.
