Why is a lightning rod pointed?

High voltage guaranteed! Pupils from Germany and the Czech Republic experienced a show lecture on lightning and thunder.

On January 30, 2017, students from the Varnsdorf Vocational School and the Bautzen Vocational School Center for Business and Technology visited the university. The students from the Czech Republic and Germany attended a demonstration lecture on lightning and thunder. Technical systems for high voltages are built as round as possible, but lightning conductors are built as pointed as possible - why? What is necessary for a person to be able to touch a high-voltage line without danger? What happens to insulators that are exposed to high voltages? These are questions that are impressively tested and answered experimentally in the "High Voltage Hall" laboratory at our Faculty of Electrical Engineering/Computer Science.

Die Hochspannungshalle der Hochschule bietet viel Raum für praktische Erfahrung.

The event takes place as part of the preparation for the Electrical Engineering Olympiad Neisse-Elektro. This is a competition to which 20 Polish, 20 Czech and 20 German pupils from the region have been invited. The winners can look forward to prizes worth EUR 1000. This event is supported by the "VDE-Bezirksverein Dresden e.V.".
