New students were traditionally welcomed to Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences on October 2, 2018 as part of the matriculation ceremony. The event took place at the Landskron KULTurBRAUEREI in Görlitz. Numerous guests accepted the Rector's invitation, including members of parliament, representatives of public institutions and companies, representatives of foreign and domestic partner universities, secondary schools and alumni, other members of the university and, of course, the new students and their families.
Ms. Andrea Friederike Behr, Managing Director of Europastadt Görlitz/Zgorzelec GmbH for Economic Development, City Marketing and Tourism, was invited to give the keynote speech this year. She outlined the path that brought her to Görlitz and pointed out the many opportunities that the region offers for a professional career. At the same time, she encouraged the new students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by a semester abroad and to get to know foreign cultures and people. She used a film to show those present the opportunities that the region has to offer culturally.
On behalf of the Mayor of Görlitz, Dr. Michael Wieler, Mayor for Culture, Building and Urban Development, Order and Security, spoke to the new students on behalf of the Mayor of the large district town of Görlitz, Mr. Siegfried Deinege, and welcomed them to their university towns of Zittau and Görlitz. He encouraged them to take part in further high-profile student projects in their university towns and to get involved in cultural life.
Oliver Kretschmar, representing the university's student council, welcomed the new students. He encouraged them to get involved in the student councils of their faculties or in the university's student council and to take advantage of the university's cultural and sporting activities.
A special highlight was the presentation of the certificates to the Germany Scholarship holders and their sponsors by the Rector, Prof. Friedrich Albrecht. These are:
