"Life on the border"

The public lecture series looks at the topic of "borders" from different perspectives.

Dr. Cordula Endter and Dr. Julia Gabler from the Faculty of Social Sciences invite students and the interested public to the lecture series "Life at the border". A border is not just a geographical line where two states or countries meet.

"The topicality and omnipresence of borders are the focus of this lecture series," explains Dr. Julia Gabler. "The lecture series looks at the border from different perspectives - i.e. intergenerational, intercultural, individual, economic, ecological and political borders. However, it also addresses where life reaches its limits or takes place at its borders and is dedicated to the lives of people in border areas. As in Lusatia, border areas are characterized by special forms of mobility, social cohesion and also by the experience of changeability," she says. Last but not least, Lusatia - the cross-border region of Lower and  Upper Lusatia - is experiencing new border shifts as a result of the structural change that has been initiated.

Using academic lectures and practical examples, the series explores where life on the border offers resources and potential that often remain invisible in current discourses.

The lecture series "Leben an der Grenze" will take place as part of the East-West College in the summer semester 2022:

  • from 24.03.2022,
  • every 14 days on Thursdays, 19:00 to 20:30,

It will be opened on 24.03.2022 by Dr. Cordula Endter and Dr. Julia Gabler. The complete program is available here.
