Research project ''Social integration without elites?

How are people with a migration background and East Germans represented in the elites?

Research project "Social integration without elites? The extent, causes and consequences of personal underrepresentation of the East German and migrant population in the Federal German elites" has been launched.

How are people with a migration background and East Germans represented in the elites of the Federal Republic? Do their shares in the elites correspond to their respective shares in the population or is the impression of a systematic underrepresentation of both population groups confirmed? If so, how is this perceived and assessed in society? What consequences does this have for the political orientations and social integration of these two groups and for social cohesion in our country?

In addition to a comprehensive empirical survey of elite positions in all sectors of society (politics, business, administration, judiciary, etc.), the project is conducting a representative population survey in order to not only record the distribution of holders of elite positions among important population groups and the reasons for different chances of promotion to the elites, but also to determine related attitudes and orientations in the population. In addition, as part of the project and with the support of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, events will be organized to stimulate public and political debate on the topic.

The project is being carried out as a joint project involving the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (Berlin), the University of Leipzig and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (TRAWOS Institute) and will run until the end of November 2020. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ).
