Exchange on the topic of digital teaching at the HSZG enters the next round

After a year full of exciting impulses for teaching and learning, we look back and forward at the same time.

In the winter semester 2022/2023, the collegial discussion format "Digital Teaching Exchange" was launched at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences as part of the HSZG Action Plan adopted by the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs Prof. Sophia Keil as part of the digitization initiative.

In cooperation with the Centre for eLearning (zfe) and the digitalization project D2C2, which is part of the Vice-Rectorate Education and International Affairs, a service has been established over the past two semesters in which lecturers at the HSZG can share their experiences of digital teaching across faculties in order to promote the transfer of best practice approaches. At the center of the regular online meetings is a 10-minute input by a teacher or a research assistant from a didactically related project. Participants have the opportunity to ask specific questions to the input providers, contribute their own ideas, receive suggestions for their own teaching and discuss with each other.

Previous meetings have focused on digital teaching formats from blended learning to hybrid teaching (Dr. Steffi Heidig), the development of digital tasks in thermodynamics (Dr. Sebastian Herrmann), the design of digital examinations (Marie-Theres Lewe, Tobias Weber), the didactic challenges in digitized laboratories (Julia Franke, Gesine Wegner), how microteaching formats can be meaningfully integrated into teaching (Daniel Winkler) and the advantages of the flipped classroom concept (Prof.in Dr.in Mandy Schulze). With reference to current trends in the digitalization of education and teaching, the deputy director of the zfe, Dr. Steffi Heidig, gave an insight into the topic of teaching videos as a lecture format. This was followed by inputs on the use of BigBlueButton in teaching (A. Sommer), digital skills in university teaching (Doreen Klein, Susan Labude, Max Schlosser), AR glasses in the laboratory (Daniel Winkler), best practice examples on the use of digital tools in teaching (Sebastian Benad) and a discussion on the use of AI in teaching with an input from the head of zfe, Prof. Dr. Matthias Längrich. With an interesting insight into the use of digital project management tools in teaching by Dr. Anna Prenzel from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, the exchange format went into the summer break. In the OPAL course accompanying the event, you can read about all the topics and speakers and find more information about the format.

A team of teachers and staff sit around a table in a lively discussion. Everyone is laughing heartily and the atmosphere is positive and engaged. They are engaged in an intense conversation about digital teaching approaches.

We would like to thank all participants for the exciting reports and valuable discussions! Special thanks also go to Deborah Halang (D2C2 project), who moderated the format and thus promoted cross-location exchange. It became clear how many great didactic approaches and possibilities of digitalization in teaching are already being implemented and how important the exchange between teachers is in order to benefit from the experiences of colleagues. At the request of the participants for a continuation of the exchange format and with a view to the future challenges of the digitalization of teaching, such as the promotion of digital skills among our students, we are going into the next round.

From October, we will be launching new episodes and a variety of discussion rounds on digital teaching formats, methods and tools, e-assessments, future skills as well as challenges and tips for the digitalization of studying and teaching. We look forward to lively discussions and are excited to hear the insights of our lecturers.
