Ground-breaking ceremony for new DLR Institute near the campus and DLR_Science_Day on the Zittau market square
The development of Zittau as a science location in the immediate vicinity of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) campus is making further progress. A ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of the construction of the new institute building for the Institute ofLow CO2 Industrial Processes of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Zittau. High-temperature heat pumps for efficient and sustainable process heat supply will be developed in a state-of-the-art building, which will be constructed directly behind the LANDER³ Natural Fibre Centre of the HSZG, with the aim of decarbonizing industrial processes. Experiments and simulations will be used to develop technologies for the use of hydrogen and carbon-free energy sources to avoid process-relatedCO2 emissions.
On the afternoon of June 28, 2024, the Zittau marketplace was the venue for DLR_Science_Day. DLR gave the public an insight into its research fields and projects at various stands.
As a strategic partner of DLR, the HSZG was also present on the marketplace and provided information about its diverse educational programs and research projects. For example, an interactive multimedia table was used to present the strategic initiative "Zukunftslernort Oberlausitz (ZukLOS)", which specifically promotes extracurricular STEM education in our region with various fields of action. Visitors were able to produce their own decorative items on a laser cutter under supervision and learn about the technical possibilities of laser cutting. A miniature flow channel provided insights into the fascinating world of fluid mechanics. The Hi!Lusatia association presented its network and its initiatives to promote cooperation in teaching, research, business and society, which position Lusatia as an attractive location for skilled workers.
DLR_Science_Day was accompanied by a colorful stage program for all generations and interesting discussions with, among others, DLR CEO Professor Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Professor Dr. Uwe Riedel, Head of the Institute forLow CO2 Industrial Processes, the Mayor of Zittau Thomas Zenker and the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs Professor Sophia Keil.
The DLR_School_Lab Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz will be jointly established as an extracurricular STEM learning location in the Junior Academy Zittau in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in the Mandau-Höfe in Zittau by the beginning of 2025. The aim is to give schoolchildren the opportunity to actively discover the fascinating world of research and technology. Under expert guidance, they will carry out experiments themselves and get to know the key research areas of the HSZG and DLR.
