The Umgebindehaus Information Centre (IZU) at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is offering lots of interesting news about this traditional regional building method on its website for the Umgebindehaus Open House Day on 31 May 2020.
Anyone interested is welcome to browse the website and find short videos, visualized Umgebindehäuser, an extensive photo gallery and selected research reports and lectures.
There are still a large number of Umgebinde houses that characterize the landscape of Upper Lusatia and Northern Bohemia. However, the decline from around 20,000 houses to around 5,000 houses within 100 years illustrates how important it is to preserve the remaining buildings. Nowhere else do buildings of this character occur in such abundance. The Umgebindehaus combines the building styles of log construction, half-timbered construction and solid construction in a way that is not only structurally unique, but also visually very beautiful due to its appearance.
