Evaluation of the project "Senior citizens' activities in the Czech-Saxon border region"
The project "Senior activities in the Czech-Saxon border region " tested the physical and mental fitness of around 80 senior citizens from the district of Görlitz and the Liberec region in summer 2014 using various cognitive and physical tests.
Meetings between German and Czech participants took place in Liberec on 26.09.2014 and 14.11.2014. Surveys were conducted during these excursions in order to gain an impression of the mood of the participants from the district of Görlitz. The main questions asked were about interest and willingness to participate in such a study again. A total of 33 of the people tested took part in the survey. The majority of respondents found out about the project through the newspaper or the association in which they are involved. Until then, none of the people surveyed had taken part in such a study or a similar one. Most of the participants felt very well informed before the tests. The clear majority of respondents were "satisfied" to "very satisfied" with the overall organization of the tests. More than half of the senior citizens surveyed were also "satisfied" to "very satisfied" with the implementation of the various test stations. When asked whether they would participate in such a study again, the clear majority responded positively. Almost all respondents would also recommend their friends or family members to take part in such a project.
On December 3, a meeting of the project partners took place at which the implementation of the tests and the initial results of the tests were discussed together with all student assistants. It turned out that the participants from the Görlitz district were slightly fitter than those from the Liberec district in terms of mental and physical measurements and that the participants from the Liberec district had better cholesterol values than the German seniors, who on the other hand had a lower proportion of diabetes cases. The mood of the students who supervised the individual stations during the test was very positive. From an organizational point of view, it was found that the test procedure could still be optimized in terms of scheduling and communication between the wards.
On December 10 and 11, the project teams met in Heřmanice for a further evaluation meeting to discuss the implementation of the entire project as well as further steps and to once again explore the possibilities for an expansion of the project with a larger number of participants or a long-term study. Further cooperation is desired by both sides and suitable funding options are now being sought. The final report of the project will be written by March 2015 , in which all results will be published and made available to the participants and all interested parties.
