The part-time Master's degree course in Social Gerontology has been an integral part of the courses offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences for 10 years now.
Now Dr. Stefan Zeller, guest lecturer at the HSZG since 2017, was appointed honorary professor for the field of geriatrics/health and ageing by the Rector of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr.-Ing. To the great delight of the Rector, who is convinced that the students on the Social Gerontology course will particularly benefit from Dr. Zeller's expertise and specialist knowledge.
Gerontology - the subject that deals with various factors of the ageing process - is becoming increasingly important for our ageing society. It is estimated that by 2030, 22 million people in Germany will be aged 65 or over. That is 29 percent of the population.
The need for specialist personnel who can provide solutions for demographic change will increase. This is precisely where the Görlitz course comes in. It trains future managers who can work, for example, in the healthcare sector, in administration and politics, but also in research, policy advice or product development for older people.
Dr. Stefan Zeller, Director of the Görlitz Geriatrics Centre and Chief Physician at the Clinic for Internal Medicine and Geriatrics II in Görlitz, has been working closely with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences since 2017. This includes the Institute for Health, Ageing, Work and Technology (GAT), which is based at the university. Dr. Zeller has been involved in projects such as VATi.
His teaching focuses on geriatrics, health and ageing, with a particular focus on demographic developments in Saxony and Germany. He also works with students to develop strategies for dealing with demographic change, taking into account the resources of our healthcare system.
He has been contributing his gerontological expertise to East Saxony for many years. He is not only a trainer for specialists in internal medicine/geriatrics at the Görlitz Clinic, but also head of the East Saxony Geriatric Network and a guest lecturer at the Saxon Police University in Rothenburg.
