Bioeconomy - Back to the future

Bio-based future - researchers and entrepreneurs discuss and pupils plant them.

On the occasion of the double event Environment Day and the opening of Science Year 2020 on 07.10.2020 on the topic: "BIOECONOMY - BACK TO THE FUTURE? #BIOÖKONOMISCH #BIOÖKOLOGISCH #BIOLOGISCH"  representatives of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences planted a tree in the Zittau student park together with pupils and teachers from the Christian-Weise-Gymnasium (CWG) and the Weinau-Oberschule (WOS).

This tree planting was made possible in particular by the climate ambassadors, i.e. committed pupils from the Plant-for-the-Planet project at both schools, who have been contributing to the annual Environment Day at the university for three years. The "Good Chocolate", which was sold by the students as part of the Plant-for-the-Planet project for the good cause of tree planting and reforestation, was always present.

"The proceeds from the chocolate sale will be used directly to plant trees and we are very pleased that we can plant a tree in the student park this year together with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the Zittau city administration," said teacher and Plant-for-the-Plant organizer of the CWG Mira Evers.

Eric Schön and Kristin Sprechert, the organizers of this year's double event, Environment Day and the opening of the Year of Science, were also pleased with the good cooperation with the two Zittau climate schools and the Zittau city administration.

"...Research and the environment as well as research on environmental topics are of great importance at our university, which we would like to emphasize once again this year under the theme of bioeconomy by combining the events Environment Day and the opening of the Year of Science. We are therefore particularly pleased about the joint initiative with the CWG and the WOS to plant a tree in Zittau, which is also intended to be a contribution and symbol for climate protection and biodiversity in Zittau," said Ms. Sprechert and Mr. Schön at the tree planting in the student park on 06.10.2020.

BACK TO THE FUTURE? #BIOECONOMIC #BIOECOLOGICAL #BIOLOGICAL" was the key question discussed at the double event on October 7, 2020. Representatives from science and industry came together to present their research projects and business models on the bioeconomy. Together with the participants, they discussed the research, development and manufacture of materials, products and processes based on the use of renewable resources. The scientific, technical, agricultural and entrepreneurial concepts and ideas presented and discussed were exciting and stimulating, all of which can contribute to solving global challenges.

"A very good event and opportunity to bring together research and entrepreneurial spirit, which offers suggestions and opportunities to advance the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the regional economy, to strengthen joint cooperation and to focus on socially important and innovative environmental topics such as the bioeconomy. In addition, such events provide impetus to address forward-looking topics on bio-based materials, renewable raw materials and renewable energies even more precisely and exemplarily in various courses of study such as ecology and environmental protection, biotechnology and renewable energy technology and to always offer our students high-quality teaching...", said Prof. Jakob Hildebrandt, who holds a professorship for environmentally oriented corporate management and sustainability.

The double event Environment Day and the opening of the Year of Science at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences once again set an example, brought people together, gave impetus and, not to forget, planted a tree that will remind us of the successful event for a long time to come.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone involved, the rector, the vice-rector, the professors, the entrepreneurs, the city councillor Dr. Kurze, the Zfe-IT team, the students and teachers, the catering and the photographers of the photo exhibition, because only together with you was our event a great success - thank you very much!

Of course, "Die Gute Schokolade" was also sold in large numbers again and we are continuing to collect for the next tree planting.
