SIKSA

Feminism, art and punk in Poland (FILM AND TALK) | From the lecture series "What can civil society do?"

Begin 19. October 2019 - 19:00 Uhr

SIKSA - actually a slang word for a young, attractive and naive woman - is probably the most controversial performance duo in Poland at the moment. Alex and Buri play with different styles in a collage-like, radically energetic and defiant manner. With their clear message against patriarchal structures, they enliven the political underground and make large parts of Polish society very uncomfortable in the process. On this evening, we will discuss with SIKSA what it is like to make political art in the face of the current authoritarian and ultra-conservative developments in Poland. Beforehand, we will watch their film "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" - A musical about Death and the Maiden (pl with English subtitles | 60 min)

About "What can civil society do": ... a lot! Regardless of whether they are fighting poverty, injustice, environmental protection or human rights: Civil society initiatives have become increasingly important worldwide in recent years. Their goals are as diverse as the conditions under which they operate. What they all have in common is that they see themselves as co-creators of social change and often form a constructively critical counterpart to the state and business. Depending on the context, their work is supported, hindered or even criminalized. This series of events presents examples from Syria, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. We will ask the actors about the preconditions for their work, their successes and setbacks and how they got to where they are today. We want to discuss this with you and them.
