"Rarely has the opening of a canteen been so eagerly awaited ..." reported Martin Richter, Managing Director of Studentenwerk Dresden, in his speech on October 5. The Chancellor of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Karin Hollstein, agrees with him and adds: "Even if the mills of the grinder have started slowly - there is a saying that goes, "... God's mills grind slowly, but grind excellently small." - which could also be interpreted as "Good things come to those who wait". In this case, the result proves her right - the guests at the opening ceremony agree that the furnishings and range on offer in the "Mahlwerk" are extraordinarily successful.
The canteen on Schwenninger Weg in Zittau was previously operated as canteen building VII from 1994 to 2014. After extensive renovation with a new interior design, the red-grey industrial design creates a very unique atmosphere. The Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB) Bautzen and the engineering firm Simm und Stolle were responsible for the preparations on site. The engineering office GDI with Mr. Thiele and the employees of the Studentenwerk Dresden were responsible for the idea, concept development and design. 150,000 euros were invested by Studentenwerk Dresden in carpentry work, kitchen and free-flow technology, furnishings and lighting alone. Norbert Seibt from SIB Bautzen takes the opportunity at the opening ceremony to express his thanks for the good cooperation with the Studentenwerk. Schwenninger Weg is mainly home to students of mechanical engineering and energy technology - this reference is also reflected in the new canteen logo.
Many students and employees of the university came to the official inauguration on October 5 and admired the unusual lamps and the original logo. Mechanical engineering student Robert K. is relieved that he no longer has to "walk" to the large canteen on Hochwaldstraße every day for lunch: "I eat in the canteen almost every day - but between two lectures it's not really possible to walk from Schwenninger Weg to Hochwaldstraße and eat in peace." He and his fellow students, who have already chosen a "favorite table", are sure that the Studentenwerk's new offer will be well received.
