“Rarely has the opening of a student canteen been so eagerly anticipated…” said Martin Richter, executive director of the Dresden 'Studentenwerk' (student union), in his speech on October 5. Karin Hollstein, Chancellor of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, agreed with him and added: “Even though the mills at the ‘Mahlwerk’ got off to a slow start—there’s a proverb that says, ‘… God’s mills grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine’—which could also be interpreted as ‘Good things come to those who wait.’ The result proves her right—the guests at the opening ceremony agree that the interior design and offerings at the “Mahlwerk” are exceptionally good.
The student canteen on Schwenninger Weg in Zittau was previously operated as Student Canteen VII from 1994 to 2014. Following extensive renovations and a new interior design, the red-and-gray industrial design creates a unique atmosphere. The Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB) in Bautzen and the engineering firm Simm and Stolle handled the on-site preparations. The engineering firm GDI, led by Mr. Thiele, and the staff of the 'Studentenwerk' (student union) were responsible for the idea, concept development, and design. The 'Studentenwerk' (student union) in Dresden invested 150,000 euros solely in carpentry work, kitchen and free-flow systems, as well as furniture and lighting. Norbert Seibt from SIB Bautzen took the opportunity at the opening ceremony to thank the 'Studentenwerk' (student union) for the good collaboration. On Schwenninger Weg, one encounters primarily students of Mechanical Engineering and energy technology—a connection that is also reflected in the new student canteen logo.
Many students and staff from the university also attended the official opening on October 5 and admired the unusual lamps and the creative logo. Mechanical Engineering student Robert K. is relieved that he no longer has to “trek” to the large student canteen on Hochwaldstraße every day for lunch: “I eat in the student canteen almost every day—but between two lectures, it’s actually impossible to walk from Schwenninger Weg to Hochwaldstraße and still have time to eat in peace.” He and his fellow students, who have already chosen a “favorite table,” are certain that the ‘Studentenwerk’s’ new offer will be good.
