Senate Ends Term of Office

On June 17, the outgoing HSZG Senate held its final meeting. The University Executive Board would like to express its gratitude for their dedicated and successful work.

On Monday afternoon, the outgoing Senate of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) held its final meeting. This meeting marks the end of the Senate’s term, during which it has shaped the university since September 1, 2019. The newly elected Senate will begin its work in the upcoming winter semester. The University Executive Board took the opportunity to thank the members of the outgoing Senate for their dedicated and successful work during their term of office.

Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kratzsch personally recognized the numerous achievements and the constructive cooperation within the body over the past five years; even in its final meeting, the Senate remained actively involved in shaping the university’s future and deliberated on the establishment of the “Applied Nursing Science” degree programme, which is set to launch shortly. This marked another important step toward expanding the HSZG’s academic offerings, through which the university is also contributing to addressing structural challenges in the region.

A highlight of the day was the subsequent tour of the new fitness room on the Görlitz campus. Compared to the one on the Zittau campus, it had previously been quite small and basic. With the renovation of the “Alte Mälzerei”—the rear wing of the so-called Tivoli—the opportunity finally arose to bring all university sports in Görlitz together under one roof. Even under the former chancellor, the Technical Administration & Facility Services division had been actively advocating for this project. After lengthy negotiations with the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism (SMWK) and the Saxon State Real Estate and Construction Management Agency (SIB), funding was secured.

The equipment in the new fitness room, which was financed from the university’s reserve fund, is completely new and modern. The University Council approved 100,000 euros for this purpose. The facility spans two levels: The upper level focuses on guided training on machines, while the lower level centers on functional training with free weights. Since its opening on March 25, 2024, over 150 students and staff members have already registered. Due to high demand, capacity will be increased to 200 spots starting in the 2024–25 winter semester.

This final meeting marks the end of a significant era for Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. We thank all members of the outgoing Senate for their valuable work and look forward to future developments under the leadership of the new Senate.
