ISO revision for breakfast?

Competent experts from the university presented the expected changes in an easily digestible and clear manner.

The project is not exactly easy to digest for quality and environmental management officers in companies: the international ISO standards on QM have been revised and there are a lot of new features to consider. For companies, this means that they must have further developed their existing quality management system to meet the requirements of the new standard within a period of three years.

And the changes are quite substantial, as the current revision is one of the most fundamental in the history of the standard to date. For example, the entire structure of the standards has been changed and converted into a so-called "high-level structure", which is intended to promote the integration of different management systems. Furthermore, current topics will be integrated into the requirements for a management system in the standard, such as the consideration of stakeholder interests, upstream and downstream production stages or a risk assessment. In future, it will no longer be possible to introduce and certify a quality management system without these (and other) aspects. The new ISO 9001 is due to come into force in September 2015.

But there is no reason for stomach ache. At the invitation of TÜV Rheinland Akademie GmbH and the Chair for

undefinedIntegrated Management Systems

(IMS) at the HSZG, representatives from companies, service providers and the university met for the second time on June 11, 2015 for an "IMS breakfast". The competent experts from the university, deputy professor Martin Sturm (

undefinedFaculty of Mechanical Engineering

) Prof. Dr. Gunter Püschel (

undefinedFaculty of Business Administration and Industrial Engineering

), presented the expected changes in an easily digestible and clear manner and gave initial tips on how these requirements could be implemented in practice.

The subsequent discussion showed that the companies are aware of the challenges, but that implementation has not yet begun. The companies would like support in the process, e.g. in carrying out a so-called GAP analysis of the existing quality management system in relation to the new ISO standard by students of the "Integrated Management Systems" course or through further information events or training courses by the IMS network, which consists of lecturers from the HSZG and TÜV Rheinland Akademie GmbH.

A second colloquium on the topic of "Revision ISO 9001" has therefore already been arranged for 2016. The 3rd IMS breakfast will take place in October on the topic of "Revision ISO 14001 (environmental management systems)".
