#HSZGChristmas tree challenge

Take part in the "Sustainable Christmas tree challenge" from the climate podcast team!

The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences’ climate podcast , “Grünzeug gegen die Apokalypse,” has been online since early November! Six episodes have been released so far. With Christmas just around the corner, it’s a great time to focus on the topic of “Sustainable Christmas.” That’s why the latest episode, titled “Santa’s Climate Change Workshop,” explores how to make Christmas more eco-friendly.

In the sixth episode, the central questions of the season are first discussed: Which Christmas tree is the right one? What are the pros and cons of real versus artificial trees? What sustainable alternatives are there that are both eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing?

Next up are Christmas decorations. From traditional ornaments to modern plastic trinkets—the episode explores how to decorate the tree in an eco-friendly way without sacrificing festive sparkle. What would Christmas be without gifts? The segment presents sustainable gift ideas that bring joy not only to the recipient but also to the planet. From homemade gifts to regional products, there’s something for everyone.

Unfortunately, the holidays are also a time of waste. The segment also examines waste production and increased electricity consumption during the Christmas season and offers practical tips on how to reduce both. Finally, the episode focuses on the centerpiece of every Christmas celebration: the festive meal. Whether it’s a traditional goose or vegetarian alternatives, the episode discusses how to prepare a Christmas meal that’s both delicious and sustainable.

In keeping with the Christmas episode, the Climate Protection Management Team has launched a Christmas tree challenge.
