Shaping the digital future of higher education

The HSZG is taking the next step in peer-to-peer strategy consulting.

From 12 to 16 April 2021 the peer-to-peer strategy consultation of the Hochschulforum Digitalisierung will take place at our university. The consultation is aimed specifically at university management as key players in a process that is supported and shaped by the entire university and is supported by experienced experts from other universities, foundations or business (the so-called "peers").

As part of the further planning of the consultation week, the Rectorate met with the organizers and the advised peers on 17.02.2021. Wishes and requirements for the strategy consultation were discussed. The peer experts of the consultation are

  • Prof. Dr. Susanne Staude, President of Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences
  • Bernadette Gruber, student at the FernUniversität in Hagen
  • adj. Prof. Dr. Dominic Orr, Senior Advisor atingi at GIZ
  • Manuel Dolderer, President of CODE University

What happens during the consultation week?

After the consultation week, the experts will draw up recommendations for the further development of digitalization with a special focus on studying and teaching. In doing so, they make an important contribution to the future development of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The aspect of how face-to-face teaching, online teaching and data protection can be reconciled in the future will play a particularly important role. Another component of the consultation will be to further strengthen the economic and social relevance of the degree courses and thus to continue to develop needs-based offers for prospective students in the future that integrate technical, digital and cultural innovation qualities.

The expertise imparted, particularly in the area of continuing education, e.g. micro-degrees (smallest study contents) and badges (forms of recognition for informal, self-directed learning) as additional digital qualifications, is particularly valuable in this context. The university needs to proactively address the ambivalence of micro-degrees and badges and integrate them into its strategic process. To this end, the "Digital Higher Education" working group (consisting of the Vice-Rector for Education and International Affairs, members of the Education Unit, the Center for Knowledge Transfer and Education, the Center for E-Learning and interested students) prepared a self-reflection of the university and provided it to the peers. The following consultation will be organized and carried out on this basis.

The Rectorate is very pleased about this opportunity for consultation and would like to thank all those involved.

Background to the University Forum on Digitalization

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is one of six universities that will be advised by the University Forum on Digitalization 2020-2021 on the strategic orientation of their digitalization projects in studies and teaching. The selected universities will receive peer-to-peer strategy advice for one year from experts from the Hochschulforum Digitalisierung.

The Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD) orchestrates the discourse on higher education in the digital age. As a central driving force, it informs, advises and networks stakeholders from universities, politics, business and society. The HFD was founded in 2014. It is a joint initiative of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, the CHE Center for Higher Education Development and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
