After school, training or a year abroad, many people start a completely new phase in their lives with their studies.
It's that time again - the university opened its doors to new students in Zittau on 10.09.2018. The annual Come in weeks take place from 10 - 28 September 2018, three weeks before the start of the semester. After school, training or a year abroad, for many, studying marks the start of a whole new phase in their lives.
As part of the Come in weeks, new students can attend various preliminary courses. They can choose from math, electrical engineering, physics and chemistry. All of these courses have a common goal: to refresh students' knowledge of the respective subjects and to bring them up to the necessary level to avoid difficulties at the start of the semester.
Staff from the student success project "Diversity as a strength", our building technicians and student helpers make final preparations for the opening of Come in weeks. More and more young people are gathering on the campus axis every minute, peering curiously through the glass into House IV until the doors are finally opened to welcome them.
As a welcome gift, all course participants receive a pre-course folder for the upcoming three weeks. In addition to the timetables, the first-year students will find some helpful materials such as a writing pad, pen and campus maps for the Zittau and Görlitz campuses. Once everyone has received their folders and the first discussion groups have been formed, it's time for the first lecture in the lecture hall.
The first preliminary course begins with math. This is the first lecture for many of our new students. As in previous years, the course is led by Professor Goldmann. After 90 minutes of concentrated listening, the participants have earned their first break.
When the future students leave the lecture hall, a buffet with delicious cakes, cookies, coffee and various cold drinks awaits them. During the "sweet break", many of the course participants get talking to each other. Tips for a successful start to your studies are provided by members of the Student Advisory Service. There is a lot of talking and joking - a relaxed start to student life. After the break, there are two more events on the schedule for the first pre-course day: the pre-calculation and the practice seminar.
In addition to learning, there are also numerous leisure activities organized by the StuRa during the Come in weeks. The new arrivals can make their first contacts and explore the region together during a variety of exciting excursions. With a sociable barbecue, a hike through the mountains, an escape from an escape room or a student pub crawl, the threat of homesickness is quickly forgotten. The new students are also eagerly awaited in Görlitz. On 24.09.2018, the participants of the preliminary math course there will receive a warm welcome. In addition to the technical input, they will have the opportunity to get to know each other better over a barbecue or on a tour of the Landeskrone. To conclude this article, we would like to thank all the hard-working helpers and participants who made the course run so smoothly.
