Voluntary Year in Science, Technology and Sustainability (FJN)

for the duration of 1 year.

ZukLOS focuses on the promotion of extracurricular STEM education at the university. It pursues the goal of establishing a region-wide future learning location. In cooperation with various regional stakeholders, several extracurricular STEM learning locations are being developed in order to strengthen extracurricular STEM education in Upper Lusatia and thus contribute to securing the next generation of skilled workers in the region in the long term.

The HSZG focuses in particular on supporting young people who want to pass on their enthusiasm for technology and science to pupils in the region.

In cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Zittau, the Junior Academy Zittau and the DLR_School_Lab Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz are being set up and operated. The aim is to bring the fascinating world of research to life through experiments. Topics include aerospace,low-CO2 industrial processes, robotics, natural fibers and energy.

The following tasks await you:

  • Supporting the set-up and operation of the DLR_School_Lab at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences,
  • Preparation, implementation and follow-up of experiments,
  • Supervision of children and young people during their visit on site,
  • Guiding children and young people through the experiments,
  • Collaboration in the new and further development of experiments on the HSZG's main research areas,
  • Support at special events (e.g. school project days, STEM project weeks, children's academy).

You should have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Successful school-leaving certificate,
  • Enthusiasm for science and technology,
  • (especially physics, computer science, chemistry and biology),
  • Technical and experimental expertise,
  • Open-mindedness, reliability, punctuality, independence,
  • creativity and innovativeness,
  • Enjoy working with children and young people and in a team,
  • Experience with MS Office (especially Word and PowerPoint) is an advantage.

Further information

Volunteers receive an allowance of EUR 498 per month (including pocket money). They will take part in at least 25 training days per year and are entitled to 26 vacation days.
