Use of AI in medicine

HSZG Professor Erik Hahn discusses legal issues at Latvia's largest science conference.

On 29.03.2023, Prof. Dr. Dr. Erik Hahn, together with Māris Sprindžuks, Latvian Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, and Prof. Dr. Paulius Pakutinskas, Professor and Director of the LegalTech Center at the Lithuanian Mykolas Romeris University, opened the PLACES conference on "Legal Issues in Medical and Health Law" with a keynote discussion on legal issues relating to the use of AI in medicine.

The conference is part of the Research Week 2023 organized by Riga Stradins University, which is the largest scientific event in Latvia and takes place every two years. In addition to the interesting program, the conference offered the opportunity for professional exchange and communication on joint projects.

Prof. Paulius Pakutinskas is the designated holder of the planned UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies and Innovations in Vilnius and has invited Prof. Hahn to become a German partner of the consortium. In addition, the joint supervision of two doctoral theses on legal issues in telemedicine was agreed with colleagues from the Faculty of Law at Riga Stradins University in Latvia.

AI applications now have a firm place in medicine. Their use can enable better patient monitoring, more precise interventions and faster and more accurate diagnoses. At the same time, their use is associated with a number of risks. These include the question of ultimate responsibility for medical decisions, the appropriate distribution of liability between developers and manufacturers, compliance with data protection and the avoidance of inequality risks in patient care as a result of high-priced offers outside of standard care. Anyone working in the healthcare sector in the future will not be able to avoid AI applications and these issues. It is therefore necessary to make our students fit for the future in this respect.
