Innovative universities take off

Kick-off meeting in Berlin discusses the importance of the 3rd mission and how successful knowledge transfer can be achieved.

The 3rd mission is becoming increasingly important for universities. But what is the 3rd mission, what is transfer? How can I strengthen the idea of transfer at my university, what strategies do I need for this within the university and what political support?

These were all questions that were discussed at the Harnack House in Berlin on March 21, 2018. The award-winning projects from the first funding period were invited to the kick-off meeting of the "Innovative University". In addition to welcoming speeches from high-ranking representatives from politics and associations, there were also interesting specialist presentations. In addition to the very basic questions and thoughts on social innovation, which have already been raised above, practical knowledge and experience were also shared. These included Prof. Torben Schubert's study "Universities as a regional economic factor" and the example of Blue Square at Ruhr University Bochum.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research's "Innovative University" program has been allocated 550 million euros over two funding periods of five years each. In the first funding period, 19 individual and 10 joint projects were selected. All projects focus on closer networking between interdisciplinary teams with the public and society on the one hand and on stimulating innovations with added social value on the other.

Information on the funding initiative and the participating universities can be found on the new internet portal: www.innovative-hochschule.de.
