The model-making workshop at the faculty W successfully created an outstanding model for the Kittlitz-based company ULT Umwelt-Lufttechnik.
ULT, founded in 1994 by Dr.-Ing. Christian Jakschik, is a leader in the filtration of emissions in industrial workplaces. The 60-cm-tall model is needed for trade shows to demonstrate how these innovative devices work. It allows one of their largest extraction and filtration units to be presented on a 1:5 scale, providing a glimpse into its inner workings.
The particular challenge was to present the device’s rather complex functionality to the viewer in a simple way. Following initial discussions at ULT with Cornelia Menzel (Marketing) and a tour of the device manufacturing facility, it was determined that the model-making workshop’s brand-new “Ultimaker 2” 3D printer would be suitable for the task.
An ULT employee in the development department—a graduate of the HSZG—Diplom-Ing. Tom Rätze provided the CAD files required for input into the 3D printer in PDF and STL formats. A series of sub-assemblies, each with a different shape, were created using 3D printing with great attention to detail. These replicas are mounted on and attached to Plexiglas panels, which in turn produce a good lighting effect.
The housing was built by master model maker Jens Freudenberg using high-quality plywood. Coordination within the team was led by Prof. Dr. Ing. Jos Tomlow, from the Department of Fundamentals of Design and Historic Preservation.
The entire process—from design development and assembly to the packaging method, a preliminary cardboard model, and the creation of the actual model in yellow plastic with gray-treated plywood—was completed in just one month. The project serves as yet another example of successful collaboration between cutting-edge technology and a university in the region.
