Demonstration model for extraction and filter unit

The model-making workshop of Faculty W succeeded in creating an outstanding model for ULT Environmental Air Technology

The model-making workshop of the faculty W succeeded in creating an outstanding model for the Kittlitz-based company ULT Umwelt-Lufttechnik.

ULT, founded in 1994 by Dr.-Ing. Christian Jakschik, is a leader in the filtration of emissions in the industrial workplace. The 60 cm high model is needed for trade fairs to explain how these innovative devices work. This means that one of their largest extraction and filtering devices can be presented on a scale of 1:5 with a view inside.

The particular challenge was to present the rather complex effect of the device to the viewer in a simple way. After initial discussions at ULT with Cornelia Menzel (Marketing) and a tour of the appliance production facility, the use of the brand new "Ultimaker 2" 3D printer from the model making workshop was deemed suitable.

An ULT employee in the development department - graduate of the HSZG - Dipl.-Ing. Tom Rätze supplied the CAD files in pdf and stl format required for input in the 3D printer. A series of partial devices with different shapes were designed in detail using the 3D process. These replicas are mounted on Plexiglas panes, which in turn provide a good lighting effect.

The housing was built by master model maker Jens Freudenberg using high-quality plywood. The team was coordinated by Prof.-Dr. Ing. Jos Tomlow from the Department of Fundamentals of Design and Heritage Conservation.

The development of the design and assembly through to the packaging method, a preliminary model in cardboard and the realization of the actual model in yellow plastic  with grey-treated plywood, was completed in just one month. The project can be seen as another example of successful collaboration between cutting-edge technology and universities in the region.
