Jan Schaller presents research on the governance of irregular migration at ESA RN35 Midterm Conference
From March 30-31, 2023, Jan Schaller participated in the Midterm Conference "Departures, Arrivals, Border-Crossings: Changing Migrations in Times of Crises" of the Research Network 35 (Sociology of Migration) of the European Sociological Association (ESA) at the University of Naples, Federico II.
As part of the conference, he presented parts of his research on the panel Discussing European Migration Policies: Case Studies. In his lecture entitled Multi-Level Governance of Irregular Migration as a Contentious Political Space, he gave insights into his field research on the Canary Islands, which he conducted for his doctoral project. The focus was on dynamics between border protection actors (local and national police authorities, Frontex) and how conflict dynamics develop between these and other (local) actors due to the construction of the governance space.
In addition to interested feedback, there was also room for networking and exchange with other researchers for potential joint projects in the future.
