Determine alcohol level without taking a blood sample
Can the alcohol level also be determined conclusively on the breath? Professor Matthias Schmidt and his team find out.
Anyone who tests above the legal limit during a breathalyzer test while driving must also undergo a blood test. This provides conclusive evidence of the alcohol level in the body—that is, evidence that will hold up in court. However, a blood test constitutes an intrusion on physical integrity, can sometimes take a very long time, and thus also skews the result.
Prof. Matthias Schmidt from the Faculty of Social Sciences at HSZG and Prof. Dieter Müller from the Rothenburg Police Academy have set out, in the research project “Evidence-Based Standardization of Breath Alcohol Levels,” to develop a breath alcohol test that eliminates the need for a blood test.
Prof. Müller’s motivation for this seems clear. But why is Matthias Schmidt, a professor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, interested in this topic? Hint: He focuses on minimizing workplace accidents.
