The new "VODAMIN II" project was presented at the Zittau landfill workshop.

From November 9 to 10, the 13th Landfill Workshop took place. It was jointly organized by the Institute of Mechatronics and Technical Informatics (MTI) at the Technical University of Liberec (TUL) and the Institute for Process Development, Peat and Natural Materials Research (iTN) at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) as part of the TESEUS project, took place in the wonderful setting of the Council Chamber at Zittau City Hall. Speakers from the industry, government agencies, and research institutions contributed to the collective dialogue and engaging discussions with their presentations. The approximately 100 participants demonstrated cross-border interest in the topic “Landfills—Material Flows and Landfill Decommissioning” and in current issues arising from the waste management hierarchy.

The following topics were of particular importance:

  • Landfills in the Future – Landfilling under the Conditions of a Circular Economy
  • Landfill Management – Strategies for Landfill Decommissioning and Site Selection for New Landfills
  • Monitoring and Aftercare – Use of environmental measurement technology for landfill monitoring
  • Rehabilitation of former mining sites – options for subsequent use
  • Modeling landfill water balances – the goal of restoring natural forest
  • Material Flows in the Waste Sector – Waste as a Substitute Construction Material
  • Waste Management with a Focus on Developing Countries – The Role of the Informal Sector

As part of the landfill workshop, the new “VODAMIN II” project was also presented by the lead partner, the state-owned enterprise Brennstoffkombinat Ústí. VODAMIN II is funded by the European Union as part of the “Free State of Saxony – Czech Republic 2014–2020” cooperation program. Project partners include the Technical University of Freiberg, the Technical University of Ostrava, the iTN at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, and SAXONIA Standortentwicklungs- und -verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH. The goal is to systematically investigate the impact of mine and tailings water on groundwater and surface water in the Saxon-Czech project area.
