Students Become Teachers

As part of the “Learning to Learn” project, students become teachers in Professor Sophia Keil’s “flipped classroom.” Thanks to the innovative e-learning methods used there, the aspiring industrial engineers in the “Manufacturing Management” class not only expand their subject-specific knowledge but also enhance their communication and teamwork skills, their ability to convey complex content, and —indispensable in today’s world—their media literacy.

To this end, in the summer semester of 2018, students were tasked for the first time with producing a “Micro Teaching Video” (MTV)—that is, a short instructional video—on a topic related to production management. Research, conceptualization, planning, the actual filming, and the editing of the video were entirely in the students’ hands. A three-person, interdisciplinary team of instructors—consisting of Professor Sophia Keil, Daniel Winkler (“Learning to Learn”), and Christiane Matthieu (video marketing from the Public Relations Office)—was on hand to provide input and feedback at every step.

Etched in the Mind

Florian Rönsch, one of the two creators of the LEGO animated film explaining the TPM method, found the innovative teaching and learning methods to be extremely beneficial:

“It was a very pleasant change from the usual university routine, where we could not only engage in creative endeavors but also practice project-oriented work.”

With a grin, he adds:

“I’ll also never forget the TPM method again because it was literally burned into my mind during filming and editing.”
