CASUS is set to become the center for digital interdisciplinary systems research in Germany.
On March 11, 2020, Dr. Michael Bussmann from the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf will present the CASUS Center for Advanced Systems Understanding. Interested students and staff members of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are cordially invited to attend.
CASUS aims to create digital, dynamic “worldviews” of complex systems by combining large amounts of data about these systems with novel methods for modeling them, in order to create a digital representation of complex reality based on systems and their interactions, thereby enabling predictions. Understanding and predicting the evolution of complex systems will become immensely important in the coming years—for example, to better understand the development of complex organisms, the long-term evolution of the Earth system, and the development of novel materials—and will thus become increasingly vital for research, the economy, and decision-makers.
The underlying assumption of CASUS is that, in the future, this knowledge and understanding of the world’s complexity and diversity will undergo a disruptive transformation through the use of novel digital methods based on big data and large-scale simulations. Systems research will play a central role in this effort by fostering interdisciplinary methodological research across scientific disciplines. At CASUS, the use of state-of-the-art technologies and methods will be reimagined. These should make the best possible use of existing technologies, significantly advance systems research through novel algorithms, and design these methods so that they are accessible to the broadest possible circle of scientists without requiring specialized knowledge.
No institute with this focus currently exists; therefore, CASUS aims to become an attractive hub for leading international experts from various disciplines of systems research and its applications, methodological research in modeling and data analysis, and mathematics, who will collaborate in interdisciplinary teams. CASUS aims to bring together the good minds for cutting-edge research in digital systems science in one place. In doing so, great emphasis is placed on innovative and unorthodox research approaches to overcome historically established structures within individual disciplines and to promote interdisciplinary solutions. A key component of the CASUS concept is an attractive international fellowship and workshop program for leading international researchers.
