Hello students from grade 11

Do you like chemistry as a school subject? Then take part in our ONLINE lectures on interesting CHEMISTRY topics. Here you will be on the trail of scientific phenomena in an understandable way.

This will help you at school and may also pave the way for you to study natural and environmental sciences later on.

Content and focus of this online lecture:

Making atomic nuclei spin - structure elucidation of organic compounds with NMR spectroscopy

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most important analytical method for structure elucidation in organic chemistry.

This powerful method is based on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the atomic nuclei of a molecule and thus provides us with valuable information on how the individual atoms are connected to each other. The hydrogen and carbon nuclei thus allow us to determine the basic framework of organic structures.

Since its beginnings in the 1950s, NMR spectroscopy has been continuously developed. Nowadays, even biomolecules such as proteins can be examined structurally using modern devices. Imaging variants of NMR spectroscopy are used as magnetic resonance tomographs in medical diagnostics.

You will get to know the structure and function of an NMR spectrometer and learn how to obtain structural information from NMR spectra.

Our lecturer Prof. Dr. Jan Mollitor is a lecturer and researcher at the HSZG in the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences with a focus on organic chemistry and organic spectroscopy.
