Education for sustainable development - innovative methods for sustainable teaching

Climate change, growing global inequalities, scarcity of resources - the future is full of challenges that sustainable development is crucial to overcoming. In order to initiate and help shape processes such as ending poverty and hunger in the world, which are formulated in the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), students need specific skills as future decision-makers. This raises the question for universities and teachers as to what contribution education can make to sustainable development, what skills students need to acquire for the future and how teaching and learning can be shaped in terms of a changing learning culture.

Begin 12. October 2023 - 09:00 Uhr
End 12. October 2023 - 17:00 Uhr

In this course, we want to explore the central topic of how teaching can be further developed towards the goal of education for sustainable development based on the following questions:

  • What does education for sustainable development (ESD) mean?

  • How can you encourage students to think critically and reflectively and support them in developing their own, well-founded attitude?

  • What innovative methods can you use to encourage students to take a differentiated view of complex sustainable development issues?

  • And what does this mean for your role as a teacher?

The course focuses on the basics of sustainable development and the concept of ESD, which is considered a key contribution to achieving the 17 SDGs. You will also try out various methods that are suitable for innovative teaching in terms of ESD and reflect on their application potential, challenges and conditions for success. The course is suitable for anyone working in higher education teaching - regardless of subject and discipline. In particular, teachers who are (also) involved in teacher training can gain important didactic impulses here.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course, you will be able to

  • critically reflect on the concept of sustainable development,

  • define the concept of education for sustainable development,

  • assess the areas of application, adaptation possibilities, potentials and limitations of various innovative methods for sustainable teaching in the context of sustainable development.
