This year's Come In Weeks took place from 10 to 28 September 2018 with numerous pre-course offers. For the first time, the period stretched over three weeks, as the range of courses on offer is constantly expanding. The new arrivals were able to refresh their knowledge in the subjects of mathematics, electrical engineering, chemistry and physics at the Zittau and Görlitz campuses in order to start their studies optimally prepared.
The bare figures
With a total of 185 participants, the courses were once again very well received in 2018. More than 100 of them attended the math pre-course in Zittau, while around 60 took part in the math pre-course in Görlitz - a new record for the Görlitz location. The physics pre-course was attended by over 70 inquisitive students, while the chemistry and electrical engineering courses attracted 30 and 40 participants respectively.
Arriving at the right place
A successful degree cannot be achieved through learning alone. A good social environment and a sense of well-being in the region where you live are key factors in student satisfaction. For this reason, the university has been offering various additional leisure activities as part of the Come in weeks for several years. This year, members of the StuRa and some student advisors (SbS'ler) were responsible for organizing the activities. New arrivals were able to get a first impression of the region through a variety of activities and, above all, make new contacts to have fun together and prevent the threat of homesickness.
The barbecue evenings in Zittau and Görlitz were very popular this year. In addition to culinary delicacies, there was a lively exchange about the impressions of the first few days during the cozy get-together. Many also took the opportunity to get to know student advisors (SbS'ler).
The joint city tour of Zittau was quickly fully booked. The new arrivals were able to learn about the historical background of the current student town at the border triangle and gain an insight into its numerous beer cellars.
As in the previous year, the pub crawl was a highlight. Almost 70 participants first enjoyed handmade burgers at Mister Bales before exploring the city's various pubs. The sociable evening was rounded off in the DeZi bar.
The weekend excursions included a trip to the beautiful Zittau Mountains. After covering many meters in altitude, all participants were rewarded with a wonderful view of the Zittau region and the Czech Republic. On another day, the participants had to prove their teamwork skills in order to escape from an escape room together.
The hiking boots of the future students at the Görlitz site were not spared either. The goal was the summit of the local mountain - the Landeskrone. Once at the top, there was a unique view over the city as well as something to eat and drink.
Conclusion
Once again this year, the Come in weeks were an enrichment for the HSZG's educational program. Many young people who opted for an academic education in Zittau or Görlitz were supported on their arrival in a completely new environment and prepared for the day-to-day life of studying.
The organizers and staff of the Diversity as a Strength project would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved who contributed to the success of the numerous teaching and leisure events.
