Intensive English workshops for teaching staff and members of the service departments.
Staff and lecturers at the HSZG took the opportunity at the beginning of September to brush up on their English skills in two target group-specific workshops lasting several days. The university welcomed two experts from the International DAAD Academy (iDA), Geoff Sammon and Dr. Abigail Dunn. The participants were particularly enthusiastic about the intensive communication exercises, which took place at the participants' workplaces, among other places, and practically ensured a team-building effect "in passing".
"I found it particularly valuable that Geoff was a very confident and experienced teacher. He made us use the vocabulary that we need in our daily working lives and provided us with suitable course material that will also help us in the future when making phone calls, sending emails and writing other texts. I realized that over the years I had developed my own vocabulary from dictionaries etc., which didn't always fit 100% into the respective context. Geoff corrected us and always gave us important tips. I loved walking around the campus and visiting the participants' offices. It couldn't have been more practical! The days were very exhausting, but absolutely helpful! It took some getting used to at the beginning, but then I also found it very useful that we were encouraged to speak English during the breaks and at lunch." [Feedback from a participant]
Thanks to iDA's extensive accompanying material, the participants were also provided with numerous exercise sheets, a dictionary and a folder with relevant specialist vocabulary. From October, course participants will be able to refresh and deepen their acquired knowledge in target group-specific English courses for teachers and non-teaching staff. The courses last 90 minutes per week and are open to all members of the university. Information on the English courses can be obtained directly from Ms. Heidig and Mr. Cope.
